Hugg in!
Hi HAVSUN! Can you please introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Håvard Sundland and I’m a 22 year old producer / songwriter from Bergen, Norway. Ive been making music for the past 4-5 years and I started out back at high school. We had a small studio in the basement of the school where som friends and I started to play around with music production.
When did you first decide to start making music?
After high school I started studying economics and made music on my free time. Half way trough the semester I got the feeling of music being the most real thing I had going on, so I decided to drop out of school to focus only on the music. Later on I found a manager and created a team. One year later I signed a record deal with Universal Music Norway. Since then it’s been a lot sessions and late nights in the studio and building the HAVSUN brand.
What is your usual song-writing process?
It depends. When I’m alone in the studio I like to start of with the chord progressions and melodies. I usually start out with a guitar to get the chords down. Later on I build the track around that. At the moment my strength isn’t at the topline (melody), but it’s coming a long 😉
When I’m in a studio session with other songwriters we pretty much start out the same way, but I like to always have some instrumentals / demos ready. It’s usually easier to have something solid to start with. The most fun part of making music is meeting new people in session who you’ve never met before. It’s so dope to see what different minds and backgrounds can make together.
What sort of things inspire you to write?
So many things. But mostly melodies and vibes. I’m super open to genres and I’ve always been listening to a lot of different music. It can also be as simple as a sound or a feeling. I like a lot of ambient stuff and moody sounds.
What can you tell us about your debut single Pillow?
Pillow is a track that I had in my library for a long time. I made the instrumental on a small “songwriter camp” that I arranged one year ago at my place here in Norway. I invited different people to make songs for HAVSUN. Two of the producers/songwriters who attended the camp; Chris Nesse and Mads Arron, are two of the first people I started collaborating with and we came up with the idea of Pillow. They are also from the same town as me, and they’ve been a mentor duo for me the last year and are the ones I work with the most.
So the instrumental for Pillow was made at the camp together with those two, but we didn’t find the right vocals for the track. Some moths later I went to the studio together with Hanne Mjøen (the vocalist on Pillow) and two other songwriters Magnus Bertelsen and Oda Evje Gjøvåg. We started the studio session with writing the topline and lyrics for Pillow and one hour later the song was done. It felt instant and right for the track. For me it’s a perfect pop song with an “edgy” twist.
What did you grow up listening to?
I’ve always been listing to a lot of edm. For me it was the melodies and the progression of information troughout the songs. But also a lot of different genres.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Now days I’m listening to a lot of pop. I’m always looking for new music that inspires. The music coming from Norways these days is so good. And it’s so fun to see Norwegian artist going viral.
What are your plans over the next months – are you planning any more releases?
I’m releasing a stripped down version of Pillow on Friday May. 25. It’s a more chill version, and I’m super exited for everyone to hear it. The video is recorded at my house on the countryside outside of Bergen.
Other than that it’s just a lot of studio time and writing new music.
Any last words?
Thank you for the chat, I really appreciate everyone who listens to my songs and I hope you guys have a great day!
